I WAS shocked and disappointed to read of the planned closure of the recently opened autism centre, Hyfrydle, in Denbigh.
This closure has attracted criticism and rightly so, from many local politicians who have given many reasons why they are opposed to the loss of this centre.
None have mentioned what to me is the most shocking and dangerous aspect of this sad affair which is the secret and unrecorded vote of Denbighshire's cabinet. What hope for local democracy when our elected representatives can make major decisions behind closed doors and in secret with no record being kept? How can these people ever be held to account by those who voted them into office if we are not to be allowed to know who voted?
I was mortified to read that a councillor for whom I voted at the recent local elections was a part of this shabby and undemocratic process. Though I stood unsuccessfully in these elections myself I decided not to stand against him as I believed him to be a believer in the democratic process.
Next time my vote will be cast with greater care and I may even stand against him.
I can think of no circumstance where our councillors need to take secret decisions, if they are afraid to let the voting public know how they vote then in my view they are not fit for office and I call upon Denbighshire County Council to abandon this and the cabinet style of government which places power in the hands of only a few members to the detriment of democracy

WARWICK NICHOLSON
Chairman UKIP North Wales.
