On Thursday, July 24 Llangollen Fringe, in association with the North Wales Jazz Society, presents a top-class celebration of the j
azz guitar blending all the instrument's major styles.

The evening features the internationally renowned Gary Potter, Wales's premier jazz guitarist Trefor Owen and Trefor's star ex-pupil Andy Hulme, the exciting violin playing of Wirral born Billy Thompson, plus one of the UK's finest double bass players, Bill Coleman.

Gary Potter's enormous popularity both as a jazz and country guitarist extends not only throughout the UK but also to Europe, the USA and Australia.

Gary, whose many awards include three times Best Country Guitarist, was the first gypsy jazz guitarist to release a DVD, Hotter Than Hot, recorded at the North Wales International Jazz Guitar Festival. His CD releases include Minor Swing, featured on BBC Radio 2's Michael Parkinson Show.

Trefor Owen plays in a highly distinctive style admired throughout the UK. He has toured Britain with the likes of Mundell Lowe and New York's Randy Johnston and performed extensively in the USA, in Nashville, San Francisco, at John Pisano's Guitar Night in Los Angeles and the Showman Café in Harlem.

In 2007, Trefor appeared at the Classic American Guitar Show in New York for the eighth time and at the prestigious Smithsonian Jazz Cafe, Washington DC. In August, he will be leading a team of international guitarists tutoring and performing at the biggest and most exciting jazz guitar event in the world, the North Wales International Jazz Guitar Festival and Summer School, to be held in Wrexham.

Billy Thompson, a phenomenal jazz violinist, has for eight years been a member of seminal jazz/rock outfit Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia. He has headlined twice with the band at Ronnie Scott's and is featured on five of their albums.

Billy has appeared with the popular Meic Stevens, and at the world famous gypsy festival in Samois with his gypsy band The Amigos, and features on a brand new concept album by Manfred Mann, due for release in the autumn.

Andy Hulme has made a name for himself on the North West jazz scene and always wins applause for his playing. Andy has performed three times at the Classic American Guitar Show and can be heard with Trefor Owen on the duo Wes Montgomery CD Road Song and on a brand new album, due for imminent release.

Bill Coleman is one of the UK's finest bass players. A prolific writer and arranger, Bill has accompanied some of the finest jazz talents in the world and, on piano, his second instrument, has worked as musical director for high profile musicians including Helen Shapiro and Kiki Dee.

The concert, which takes place at Llangollen Town Hall, starts at 8pm and admission is £10.
