WALKERS are being called to go the extra mile this year for the ‘Bala Challenge’ taking place across three mountain ranges around Llyn Tegid.

The event is in its 13th year and the Rotary club’s new president and event organiser, Norman Jones, is hopeful this year will be bigger than ever.

Mr Jones said: “We’re very much looking forward to the event and we’re hoping to build on last year.

"Over 250 walkers attended from across the UK last year, with many returning year after year.

“There has been a lot of activity on social media so we are confident even more people will be taking part.

“The walks follow around the lake and are beautiful, you can see why people come from across the UK and keep returning to the take part in the event because the scenery is outstanding.”

Participants will be able to follow various routes as part of the challenge which have been designed by a former member of the Rotary Club, Ray Hind, who was a mountain leader in the area.

The main route, the Bala Challenge, is a 20-mile circular walk around Llyn Tegid and the Aran ridge which includes a total ascent of 4,100ft and is estimated to take between 7-10 hours.

Other treks include the Bala Lake circuit, which includes a 14 mile route around Llyn Tegid and a scenic walk eight miles in length with a 1,700ft accent to finish in Llanuwchlyn.

A three-hour guided walk will also be on offer which includes a local expert who will provide information on the area’s history and wildlife.

Penri Jones, press officer for Bala & Penllyn Rotary club, said: “It’s an opportunity to experience the marvellous scenery of southern Snowdonia with views of the largest natural lake in Wales. Walkers will be surrounded by three mountain ranges, Berwyn, Aran and Arenig, with the possibility of seeing the natural wildlife, including Buzzards and Red Kites.

“The route has been chosen to maximise the views over a variety of terrain including farmland, moorland and forest.”

The Rotary club will be fundraising for the North Wales Air Ambulance, RNLI and the Mountain Rescue. However walkers are also encouraged to take on fundraising for their own charity.

All walking routes start at Penllyn Leisure Centre on Saturday, May 12 between 8am and 9.30am, though finishing points vary.

Return transport via the Bala Lake Railway is available at a discounted price.
