Redevelopment of the former North Wales Hospital site has moved a step closer.

Denbighshire firm Jones Bros were chosen as the developer for the site by Denbighshire County Council (DCC) cabinet, beating out Signature Investments for the contract.

Jones Bros, who will work in partnership with North Wales Building Preservation Trust (NWBPT), will take ownership of the site once the DCC has concluded the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO).

A spokesman for Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK said: “We are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with the North Wales Building Preservation Trust, and to be selected by DCC.

“Our first step will be to conduct site investigations to improve our understanding of the site and perform initial steps to make the site more secure.”

“The findings will help the partnership to finalise a development plan and planning application for the site.

“We are keen to manage expectations of local people and so stress this is the start of a lengthy process involving all key stakeholders, including DCC.

“We expect the complete redevelopment to take several years. The site has had a number of owners, during which time it has deteriorated, and represents a complex and challenging project.

“We aim to balance the preservation of the existing buildings with ensuring the project is viable.

“However, we also want to assure local people that our partnership is serious about regenerating this landmark site, and we are going to start work immediately once the CPO and transfer of the site have been completed.”

Jones Bros, based in Ruthin, is one of Wales’ leading civil engineering companies and has a strong, proven track record for major projects and developments. They are proposing a predominantly housing led redevelopment on the site.
