A man with mental health issues who moved from Wolverhampton to the Vale of Clwyd for a better life had twice bitten a PC after being arrested, a court heard on WednesDAY.

Shane Watkins, aged 25, of Dolydd, Rhewl, Ruthin, was jailed for six weeks and ordered to pay £150 compensation and £200 costs after he admitted two assaults at Llanrhaeadr on Monday.

Prosecutor James Neary told magistrates at Llandudno that Watkins was punched by the officer after the first bite to his arm. The second bite was more painful and incapacitant spray had been used on Watkins.

Mr Neary said the defendant had a history of failing to comply with community orders.

Defence solicitor Nia Dawson said Watkins was “very poorly” and had been without medication. Police had found him difficult to deal with because of genuine mental health issues.

The defendant was remorseful and had a black eye, bruising and handcuff marks following his arrest, the solicitor added. Watkins believed the best thing for him would be custody.
