AN auction will be held in Llandyrnog this weekend to raise funds towards staging the Urdd Eisteddfod in Denbigh in 2020.

The Llandyrnog, Llangwyfan and Aberwheeler Urdd Appeal Committee (LLAAC) is seeking to contribute £8,000 as one of 30 committees across Wales fundraising for the 2020 Urdd Eisteddfod, adding towards the Denbigh area's overall target of £315,000.

Julia Hughes, co-ordinator for the LLAAC’s upcoming auction, said: “We’re hoping to raise money towards our target through these fundraising events, however these events are also about encouraging the community to take part in the activities taking place in the area leading up to the Urdd Eisteddfod in 2020.”

The combined input of the 30 committees is necessary as the cost of staging the Urdd Eisteddfod in Denbigh, the largest youth festival in Europe, is expected to reach £1.8million.

In recent years the Eisteddfod has attracted some 15,000 competitors with an attendance of around 90,000 over the whole event.

The LLAAC has linked up with businesses, organisations and individuals to guarantee 67 items of local interest will be on auction at the event.

Items include up to two weeks in a private house in the Morrone del Sanio region of Italy, one night dinner, bed and breakfast in Portmeirion, and a family weekend for four at one of the Urdd sites, Glanllyn, Llangrannog or Cardiff, including accommodation and food.

There will also be a range of food and drink related items including vouchers for D & J Jones Butcher, Llandyrnog, and Chilly Cow ice cream, Ruthin, a three-course dinner for two people including a bottle of wine at the Kimnel Arms in Llandyrnog and much more.

For collectors there are signed mixed martial arts boxing gloves by undefeated UFC, Welsh and British champion Brett Johns and an original landscape painting by Dafydd Iago.

Ms Hughes added: “Our aim is to offer a wide variety of items to suit all people.

“The committee is grateful for the help of businesses who have been kind and supportive by contributing to an event that will be great for the area.”

The auction will take place in Llandyrnog Village Hall on Friday, April 20 at 7.30pm with free entry.
