STUDENTS and staff have made their final farewell at a concert for Denbigh Community College and its role in the community.

Over 200 people attended the event at Denbigh College on Friday, May 25, including Denbigh students and staff past and present, parents, CEO Dafydc Evans, tutors from Rhos, Ann Jones AM, local councillors and the mayor

Performances from student bands such as the DMC Brass Band and Resurgence helped to attract donations to raise more than £600 for the concert’s chosen charity, Love Hope Strength, which supports people with cancer and leukaemia.

Jacob Tudor-Jones, a first-year music technology student who started a petition against the college’s closure, which received over 2,000 signatures, led organisation of the concert. Mr Tudor-Jones said: “It was the perfect send off for the college. Everyone in attendance had a brilliant time.

“We had a great turn out from the community. We also had the principal of Denbigh College from when it opened in 2001 in attendance, who fought for the music technology centre after the announced closure.

“The bands and acts were amazing. The brass band played many traditional DMC Brass Band tunes, with some film music thrown in for good measure. The DHS Vocal Ensemble were phenomenal and were even scouted out by a local event organiser and will be performing in some big local events.

“Resurgence, which contains two current Denbigh Students played impeccably. Everybody loved them, and CRY, who are made up of ex Denbigh college students got everyone up dancing.

“It was a night that we will cherish for many years.”

Love, Hope, Strength had also attended the event, and received eight signatures for bone marrow donation.

Mr Tudor-Jones added: “The students feel that the college has had a proper send off, which is very important. We're obviously still upset and angry that they are closing our college, however we feel like the college has had an appropriate farewell.

“We would like to thank the businesses that sponsored us, particularly DAS Outdoors, as well as our tutors, Lisa, Ffranc and Russ, and receptionists Glenda and Heather for going above and beyond for us.”
