A team of young Denbighshire footballers has won national honours.

Denbighshire Schools Football Association (DSFA) U12s won the Wales Schools FA's David Nickless shield, beating Cardiff and Vale County 5-2 in the final in Oswestry on Saturday, May 5.

The team was made up of Year 7 pupils from a number of schools including Ysgol Dinas Bran, Ysgol Glan Clwyd, Prestatyn High School, Denbigh High School, Rhyl High School and Ysgol Brynhyfryd.

Cammron Morris (2), Lloyd Hayes, Loui O'Carroll and Lewis Evans scored to send the trophy to Denbighshire.

The DSFA was set up with support from Denbighshire County Council as part of its work to ensure young people develop life skills and behaviours that contribute to good health and well being.

A spokeperson for the Denbighshire Schools Football Association said: "The DSFA was only formed in September 2015 and to be classed as the best in Wales for the U12s age group is a massive achievement.

"Everyone involved is really proud of the players who were fantastic representatives for the county during the tournament.

"Coaches Gavin Bennett and Ed Jones were instrumental in the success and would like to thank them and the parents for their dedication to the team."

The U12s qualified for the final stages of the competition after finishing top of the northern qualifying group, remaining unbeaten, scoring 32 goals and conceding only two.
