A PUPIL from a Ruthin secondary school is set to fly the flag for Wales badminton on the international stage next month.

Carys Jones, 16, in year 11 pupil at Ysgol Brynhyfryd, will join the Badminton Wales squad at the Paris World Games, an international competition for young sportspeople taking place from 6-10 July.

Ms Jones qualified for the games after finishing third in the Welsh Ladies’ badminton national competition last month, which put her fourth in Wales’ girl’s rankings and in turn booked her place at the Paris games.

Ms Jones, who lives in Ruthin, said: “I am thrilled to have come so far and to represent my home country of Wales is an honour. I have worked really hard and have managed to study for my GCSE’s too.”

Mrs Wilkinson, head of year 11 at Ysgol Brynhyfryd, said: “Carys is an inspirational young lady who works hard at school and has a passion for her sport.”

Around 20,000 young people from 80 countries will be competing at the week-long event in Paris, in football, badminton, basketball, handball and rugby sevens.

A spokesperson for Badminton Wales said: “Badminton Wales is travelling with a young team who will have the skill and determination to make a big impression at this global event.

“No doubt their intensity in training will increase over the next few months and Badminton Wales thanks the parents and schools for the support shown to these young athletes.”

Ms Jones is working with her teachers to ensure she can complete her busy training schedule whilst preparing for her GCSE exams.
