THIRTY-five daredevils aged between 12 and 83 took a leap of faith by abseiling down St Asaph Cathedral’s tower.

Money raised from the event on Saturday was split between Ty Gobaith and the refurbishment of the city’s parish church.

Visitors also enjoyed a spring fair with activities and stalls held around the parish church.

There was a model truck and tractor display, motorbikes, a scarecrow competition and best-dressed bike competition.

‘Looking after our Environment’ was the theme of the day and children from St Asaph VP School and Ysgol Esgob Morgan made bunting highlighting concerns about the state of the planet and how to act responsibly.

A parish church spokesman said: “This was the first ever abseil down the cathedral tower.

“A number of supporters and well-wishers sat on the grass in the sun – encouraging and applauding each ‘landing’.

“We are grateful to the dean for allowing us access to the tower for the venture.”

In the churchyard, the Rotary Club barbecued burgers and sausages, courtesy of ‘Neil the butcher’ and there was also the chance to drive model lorries and tractors.

“There was bird box construction stall which soon sold out, as did the cake stall,” the spokesman added.

“The weather was very kind to us, enabling all visitors and abseilers to have a wonderful time.

"It was a great pleasure to be able to welcome so many of our community to the church and its grounds – and to demonstrate the even greater potential for community use in a fully-renovated building.

"Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we will now be able to make a sizeable donation to Ty Gobaith and boost our building fund.”
