Definitely Maybe (12A)

IT doesn't take a genius to work out that with Valentine's Day evoking loving feelings in most of the population at this time of year, now is the perfect time to release a rom-com seeing as it has a high chance of pulling in the audience.
Rather than the tried and tested formula common to this genre - that has been recreated time and time again and recycled endlessly in film featuring the likes of Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Rene Zellweger it's refreshing to watch a romantic film that a) doesn't feature any of these actors and b) creates a much more original story for viewers to follow.
Ryan Reynolds stars as Will Hayes, a 30-something Manhattan dad in the midst of a divorce. His 10-year-old daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin), starts to question him about his life before marriage. Maya wants to know everything about how her parents met and fell in love so that she can try and understand what went wrong.
Will agrees to tell her the story of how they met, but changes the names so Maya has to guess which of the three girls in Will's pre-marital history is her mother - a kind of romantic whodunnit.
Starring Elizabeth Banks, Isla Fisher and Rachel Weisz as his three former loves, the audience joins Maya in trying to guess which one of these women he ended up marrying and which of them, if any, can restore his faith in love.
The unique formula for this film is one that event adamant haters of the genre will find themselves enjoying. A refreshing take on a worn-out genre.
