Meet The Spartans (12A)

SPOOF season is upon us with new comedy Meet the Spartans.
After successfully skewering Hollywood's scariest movie – as two of the writers on Scary Movie, romantic comedy franchises – in the guise of Date Movie, and Hollywood blockbusters – Epic Movie, writers/directors/producers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer have now set their sights on the machismo fuelled 300.
In a very similar story to the aforementioned computer enhanced movie the film follows the heroic Leonidas, armed with nothing but leather underwear and a cape, as he leads a ragtag group of...wait for it...13 (that's 13 not 300) Spartans to defend their homeland against the invading Persians, whose ranks include Ghost Rider, Rocky Balboa, the Transformers, and a hunchbacked Paris Hilton.
Filled to the brim with jokes at the expense of celebrities, last year's biggest films and the adoption pattern of Angelina Jolie it's certainly not an intellectual film.
Personally I started getting tired of these films after the last Scary Movie and definitely by the time Epic Movie was on the scene, they really need a total revamp especially with more discerning audiences opting for the more sophisticated Knocked Up and Superbad films now scoring high with critics.
If you loved the aforementioned Epic Movie you will probably appreciate this, but otherwise steer well clear.
