GWERSYLLT PARK 258-6
RHEWL 271-6
(Rhewl won 6-4)

AFTER totting up 271-6, Rhewl will have anticipated a bumper points haul from their end of season encounter at Gwersyllt Park.

However, things didn’t quite go to plan as the hosts also made hay with bat in hand and in the end in-form Rhewl were left with just six points for their efforts.

It was a day for batsmen as the away side’s rate was better than a run-a-ball batting first.

Openers Alex Gill and Jon Eccles for Rhewl off to a flying start, before the villagers’ captain was the first to depart for a fine 63.

Next in was Andrew Halliday, who then proceeded to keep Gill company for another considerable length of time, before he was out for an excellent 54.

Simon Williams added 17 further down the order, but the main man was Gill, who ended the innings unbeaten on a brilliant 120.

Gwersyllt Park were left with the daunting prospect of having to make 171 just to pick up a point, but the batsman-friendly day was about to continue.

Wayne Evans led the hosts’ charge with an undefeated 112, well supported by opener Darren Jones’ innings of 43.

The Rhewl bowlers stuck to their task, with wickets falling to Andrew Halliday (3-62), Matt Best (1-48) and Rob Eccles (1-53).

A thrilling match ended with Gwersyllt Park just 14 runs short of victory.
