A PAIR of North Wales twins will achieve what no-one else in Britain has ever accomplished next week.

There have been a sudden change in travel arrangements for Denbigh table tennis playing twins Angharad and Megan Phillips.

Having expected to be in Portugal for mid-December, their itinerary was suddenly amended when Wales were called in as late replacements to take part in the forthcoming World Junior Table Tennis Championships, which will be held in Hyderabad, India.

The championships run between December 9 and 16.

For this particular event, the top 20 countries are invited, based on world rankings.
Originally, Wales were just outside this select group of countries which includes the likes of China, Japan, North and South Korea, but the late withdrawal of Tunisia opened up a space for Wales to participate.

The standard of the championship is such that Angharad and Megan, along with team mate Charlotte Carey, are the first ever females from the UK to participate in the event.

The World Junior Table Tennis Championships is an annual competition for juniors under 18 and the tournament has been held by International Table Tennis Federation since 2003.

Last year, China’s Chen Meng won the girls’ individual title at the championships, which were held in Manama and Koki Niwa prevented a Chinese clean sweep at the event.

The Japanese player claimed victory in the boys’ singles.

Both Angharad and Megan have previously played in India.

As 16-year-olds, they formed part of the Welsh team that played in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi back in 2010.

In addition, Angharad also visited the subcontinent when she represented Wales, as a 14-year-old, at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Pune in 2008.

Both girls are comfortably placed in the top-800 of the world at present.

In the current list of world rankings, Megan is 731st and Angharad is 781st, with only 50 ranking points separating the sisters.

Megan was as high as 634th in the world back in July, while Angharad was up to 719th at the same time.
