DENBIGH TOWN 3

DETERMINED Denbigh Town are now the favourites to finish as the Huws Gray Alliance runners-up behind champions-elect Caernarfon Town.

Eddie Maurice-Jones charges regained third spot in the standings thanks to their 3-0 triumph at FC Queens Park on Saturday.

With four games left to play, Denbigh look well set to overhaul second-placed Airbus UK Broughton to achieve a runners-up finish.

Their main rivals for that lofty finish are Holywell Town and a winner-takes-all match-up looks likely to take place at the end of the campaign, with Holywell hosting Denbigh on May 2.

Turning back to the latest spot of action and team boss Maurice-Jones changed his side following the midweek win against Porthmadog, aiming to give players some game time ahead of a heavy schedule of fixtures over the next fortnight or so.

Joel Hewitt, Corey Smart and Warren Duckett started the match, with Ben Nash, Matty Cook and Andrew Swarbrick on the bench.

Denbigh started well, with Hewitt breaking down the right wing and sending a great low cross across the Queen’s Park penalty area, but neither Duckett or Matthew Worrell could get on the end of it.

Seconds later and Duckett was involved when his looping shot just sneaked over the home crossbar.

Town turned their pressure into a goal when they claimed the lead on six minutes.

Rakim Newton's low cross found Duckett at the back post and he laid the ball off for Craig Pritchard to fire home from six yards.

Newton was in the thick of the action once more when he dribbled around a defender before finding Worrall, who turned well and shot just past the keeper’s left hand goal post.

While Queens Park had some chances near Denbigh’s goal, Town keeper Keighan Jones was mainly kept occupied by back passes from defenders Liam Smith, Dan Sullivan and Joel Hewitt.

Queens Park's main threat came from Matty Williams, who won several aerial battles.

The home side had a great chance to equalise following a rare slip by Smith.

Winger Tom Williams laid a great ball for Matty Williams, whose shot was blocked by Sullivan and then went out for a corner.

Town regained their dominance of possession after this scare and they were unlucky not to go two-up.

Good work from Gareth Partridge, Duckett and Worrall created a chance for Joe Culshaw, whose attempt was blocked by ex-Denbigh player James Etherington.

Denbigh did manage to bag a second goal on 37 minutes.

Joe Culshaw took a delightful free kick and Duckett headed it across goal for Dan Sullivan to tap in from close range.

On 65 minutes Denbigh put the game to bed.

Duckett was once again the creator, while it was Pritchard who netted a superb individual goal.
