IT was a clash of the leading lights in a knockout competition.

In the semi-finals of the Llandudno and District Table Tennis League Division One Cup, the top-two teams in the table clashed.

In the end, Amlwch A prevailed by the narrowest of margins at the expense of Trinity A.

Trinity's Abhishek Bathula proved to be the strongest player on the night by securing a maximum, which included a five-game thriller where he became the first player to beat Keith Williams this season.

Owen Hopwood won the opening two games against both Keith and Paul Collins, but on each occasion he was beaten in the fifth.

Another five-game encounter witnessed Ian Ault scrambling home 11-9 against Matthew Fox.

Trinity A’s fourth win was secured in a straight sets doubles victory. In the other semi-final, Conwy B could only field two players versus Trinity B.

The opening four games were all hard fought five-game battles, with Sean Lucas beating Chris Phillips, who in turn overcame Paul Hulme.

Rob Stewart produced a great fightback to beat Paul and Stuart Dearden came from two down to smash his way past Sean to win the tie.

Sean beat Rob and teamed up with Paul to land the doubles, but a place in the final was no longer an option.
