RHEWL 1

LLANDYRNOG 2

IT'S six points out of six for Llandyrnog to open their campaign, writes SHAUN DAVIES.

Things weren't straight-forward for Jimmy McNally's charges during the hugely competitive clash at Rhewl, but the lads from Cae Nant managed to edge through to record their second win of the opening week.

From the perspective of Sion Roberts' side, they will rue not making the most of a strong purple patch after they scored.

Llandyrnog countered this by switching Chris Williams to a defensive role in the second half and as a result, the visitors looked far more solid at the back during the second 45 minutes.

Following an even start, Llandyrnog claimed the lead after 12 minutes had elapsed.

Pat Hinchcliffe ghosted into the area and after taking the ball around home number one Dave Carroll, he squeezed his effort in from a tight angle.

That lead wasn't destined to last for too long, though, and Rhewl were level within two minutes.

Ian Williams' pinpoint free kick picked out Elis Owen to volley home from close range.

Rhewl dominated for the next quarter-of-an-hour and they should really have taken the lead.

Ian Williams placed a free header straight at visiting number one Danny Jones, while Iolo Hughes should have struck at goal when well placed in the box, but instead he teed up Matty Evans, who blazed his effort over the top.

As Rhewl continued to boss things, Ian Williams' free kick clattered against the crossbar via a deflection off the wall.

Another free kick led to the home side's next chance and a quick set piece set up Dyfan Lloyd, whose header forced a good save from Danny Jones.

Llandyrnog turned things around to finally create chances of their own and John Jones' strike was well saved by Carroll.

A minute later and the visitors were inches away from claiming the lead.

Pat Hinchcliffe's volley clattered against the crossbar and bounced down before being cleared.

Llandyrnog's bright spell resulted in a goal nine minutes prior to the interval.

Great work from Jordan Oldbury set up Josh Jones to grab his third goal of the season.

The away side twice had the ball in the net during the second half, bit both of these were chalked off.

Brandon Keating netted with a fine 35-yard free kick on 62 minutes, but the set piece was indirect and it failed to find a touch on its way in.

Three minutes from time, Josh Jones had the ball in the net once again, but this was ruled out for offside.

Llandyrnog had the better chances during the second period, with a fine Dave Carroll save denying Jordan Oldbury, while Keating should have done better with a close range volley during the closing five minutes.
