IT'S a clean slate at Huws Gray Alliance club this season, with a new squad being built from scratch.

Last season, Denbigh Town finished in a terrific runners-up position in the league under the stewardship of Eddie Maurice-Jones, who has since left to take the role of director of football at Rhyl.

New joint-boss at Denbigh Matty Jones hasn't really had an off-season and after losing last season's squad, Town have spoken to scores of potential new players over the summer.

"We have been left with no players from last year's squad," said Jones.

"We have spoken to about 60 different players over the course of the off-season.

"The way we were selling it to players was this is somewhere you can come to be coached and it's going to be a positive environment.

"We are moving towards having a very, very good group of players.

"The lads can understand the direction we are working in.

"The new players can feel the buzz about the place and build it up."

Among the club's latest acquisitions are striker Jake Walker and the versatile Lewis Jay Sirrell.

Instead of looking at higher profile matches, Jones explained that Denbigh's pre-season programme was about playing teams at a similar or slightly lower level.

This, in turn, would help the new team to gel.

"We didn't want to spend 90 minutes chasing the ball around," he added.

"We thought that we would go for good sides that are in the leagues below.

"We have an idea in our head what we want and how we want to play, and we are very confident in that idea.

"Going through the squad, there's a fair amount who have been at professional clubs and the lads from Denbigh will give absolutely everything.

"And some other lads have played in the Welsh Premier League."

As far as targets are concerns, Jones said: "We have got nothing to go off, so it's really a case of sticking to our guns.

"Losing last year's squad, the expectations from the outside public and our board is that we are starting from scratch.

"It gives us a chance to put our own spin on things.

"I'm looking at this as a long-term thing.

"Our goal is to get into the Welsh Premier League."

There will be a chance for people to meet the staff and players later this month.

Denbigh Town FC has organised an open day, which will take place at Central Park on Sunday, July 22.
