TWO tough matches will start the season for Ruthin Town.

The Huws Gray Alliance campaign opens for Chris Williams' side on Friday evening when they head to Holywell Town (7.30pm).

Ironically, Holywell were Ruthin’s final opponents of last season in the final of the NEWFA Cup.

Manager Chris Williams is under no illusion as to how difficult a task the first game of the season is.

“Every club wants to win the first game,” he said.

“It’s never easy and we will have to be at the top of our game if we are going to get anything at Holywell.

"Pre-season has gone well and I’m delighted with the lads that have come in and the work that everyone has put in.

"Preparation has gone well and we are ready. It will now be up to the players who are selected on Friday.”

Ruthin’s squad looks stronger than last year and the club are looking ahead with confidence.

To illustrate the strength of the league, Ruthin will host Bangor City next Tuesday, August 14 for their first ever league encounter with one of the biggest clubs in Wales.

Kick-off will be at 6.45pm, with a large crowd expected at the Memorial Playing Fields.

Club chairman Paddy Carney said: “We have some big games coming up right from the start, pre season is a busy time despite what people may think.

"Football clubs are probably busier during the close season than during the season. There are players to speak to, attract and register, friendlies to organise, sponsors to contact, AGMs to organise and attend and we have done a lot of work on the pitch this year.

"I would like to thank all our volunteers for the great job they do. We are looking forward to the season and hope we can continue to give the people of Ruthin something to shout about.”
