CORWEN 4

FC NOMADS 0

CRACKING Corwen's goal tally for the campaign is already into double figures.

After opening their season with a 6-1 NEWFA Challenge Cup triumph over Caerwys, Danny Jellicoe's side started their Wrexham Area League Premier Division campaign in terrific fashion with a 4-0 home success versus FC Nomads of Connah's Quay.

Despite the eventual outcome, it was the visitors who went the closest to breaking the deadlock early on.

When a corner was whipped into the Corwen box, Lee Reynolds rose above the home defence to get his head to the ball, but he could only send it over the bar.

The opening goal instead went in Corwen's favour in the sixth minute.

Good work from Jak Newell and Ioz Jones set up Scott Evans to play in Joe Williams, who got one-one-one with keeper Jon Rushton before blasting a left-footed shot into the back of the net.

Corwen’s Nathan Davies was the next player to try his luck via a powerful first time shot 25 yards from goal, which was blocked by the Nomads defence.

The visitors looked to respond to falling behind and in the 21st minute the ball was played towards Ben Howarth in the Corwen box, with the midfielder poking his strike narrowly wide of the target.

Corwen weren't too far away from doubling their advantage from a corner.

Scott Evans hit a low ball into the penalty area, where Ryan Billington beat his marker to it, but he could only toe poke it over the crossbar.

The scoreline did become 2-0 in the 37th minute.

Rather than shooting, Iorweth ‘Ioz’ Jones held the ball up and passed it to Ryan Billington, who found the bottom corner of the net with a great finish.

Billington was in the thick of the action once again three minutes prior to the half-time whistle.

Scott Evans sent a free kick into the danger area from the halfway line and Billington was the first to get to it, with his attempt ending up just wide of the target.

Corwen continued to press when the second half got underway and four minutes after the restart, Ioz Jones skinned left back Ash Lewis before sending the ball towards goal.

The ball hit visiting centre back Keiran Price and went it to the back of the net.

The dubious goals panel will have to decide on whether Jones can claim this goal or not!

Although they now appeared out of sight, the hosts remained on the front foot and their next chance came when Ryan Billington knocked the ball to Joe Williams.

While the striker went past a defender, he could only put the ball wide of the target.

Williams was in the thick of the action again just before the hour mark, when he went for goal via a free kick from near the corner of the box.

A goal did arrive as Ryan Billington diverted the ball into the back of the net for his second of the afternoon.

Corwen went in search of another goal when good work from Williams and Ioz Jones set up Kyle Jones, whose shot forced a good save out of Rushton.

Matty Hill looked for a consolation goal at the other end when he attempted an overhead kick, which was off target.

Joe Williams went in search of his second of the afternoon in the 83rd minute, with his header ending up just wide of the post.

Corwen did find the back of the net for a fifth time in stoppage time as substitute Tommy Mutton tapped home.

His celebrations were short-lived as the goal was disallowed for offside.

The final whistle confirmed a well-earned three points for Corwen against a good FC Nomads side and this will give them confidence to ahead of this week’s games against Penycae and FC Queens Park.
