AFTER the full on schedule of the previous week, last week proved to be a quiet one for Denbigh Harriers.

Saturday dawned bright and early with the annual King John’s Castle Fell Race.

Stalwarts of this course are husband and wife Jon and Victoria Whitehead, and Menai Baugh, who were joined on the start line by newcomer Mat Jones.

It was a perfect day on the fells, with the weather starting out chilly, but the sun soon came out.

Conditions underfoot were good, with a relatively modest field of 36.

Post-race chips in the Raven, along with the race, of course, are the highlights of the day!

Mat Jones led the Harriers home in 50.15 winning his VM50 category – although the race organisers would like to see his birth certificate next time!

Next in was Victoria in 53.04, followed by Jon with a personal best of 58.55.

Menai Baugh couldn’t resist trundling slowly around, but unfortunately she got lost!

Despite this, she still won her VF60 category.

Sunday morning saw the Guilden Sutton 10k and the promise of a fast 10k course.

The race was billed as two undulating laps, followed by a fast flat downhill section.

What everyone failed to register - even those who’d run it before - was that after that glorious downhill, there is a rather long steady climb to the finish.

Phil Hayes was first Harrier home, finishing 47th and running a personal best in 42.04, although he was disappointed not to get in under 42 minute.

Next home and running together were Vic Belshaw and Emma Collins.

Vic, returning from a chest infection, was having a training run, while Emma took her category by eight minutes from her nearest rival.

They finished 77th and 78th respectively, in 44.52 and 44.53.

Chris Baldwin was chasing VM60 UK rankings, requiring runners complete a 10k in under 49.30.

Chris, in his last year as a VM60, was just outside the cut-off in 49.34.

Dawn Marshall was aiming to complete the race in under an hour and she was delighted with her time of 58.15.

Parkrun results:

Conwy: 87, Sarah Bayliss 25.57; 160, Andrew Morris 30.44.

Bodelwyddan Castle: 6, Vic Belshaw 20.33 (pb); 28, Elen Baugh 26.17 (3rd lady).
