CONWY Borough picked up another valuable point with a 2-2 homer draw with Porthmadog.

The Tangerines showed tremendous character once again to claim a share of the spoils against their Huws Gray Alliance rivals despite being down to ten men for the majority of the contest, and manager Gareth Thomas was full of praise for his side’s resilience that will stand them in good stead as they prepare to welcome Rhyl in the JD Welsh Cup first round on Saturday (2.30pm).

He said: "The players have shown some character throughout the 90 minutes.

“The boys have been on the end of some frustrating decisions throughout the game and to play at this level for 72 minutes with ten men says it all about the squad we are trying to develop.

“We are delighted to get something from the game, but we have to be better at times again we have switched off at set plays which is disappointing but the lads to come back and score with a minute left is great for them and shows a never say die attitude."

After both sides missed chances early on, the hosts were dealt a blow when Iolo Hughes was sent off after 18 minutes for foul and abusive language, a decision that incensed the Boro dugout.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the home side weathered the storm and took the lead just before the break when a Corrig McGonigle free-kick was headed in by skipper Gerwyn Jones.

After the break saw keeper Keighan Jones pull off a series of smart stops to keep his side ahead, but he could do nothing to prevent Gruff John Williams from nodding home a leveller after 73 minutes.

Things looked bleak for the Tangerines when Williams pounced again to give Port a stoppage time lead, but there was still time for further drama which arrived with virtually the final action of the game when McGonigle diverted a cross past Paul Pritchard at the death.
