THIRTEEN has proved to be a lucky number for Ruthin Rugby Club!

Ruthin opened their WRU League Division One (North) campaign courtesy of a 13-3 success at Bethesda.

Making it a club double, Ruthin Seconds edged to a 13-10 Division Three (North East) triumph at Bro Gwernant.

Dinbych's Division One season opened with a 41-5 loss at Llandudno, however there was better fortune for Bala, who won 22-15 at Dolgellau.

RGC's Premiership season opened with a 22-15 loss at Merthyr.

Things were initially going well for the North Walians, who were 15-3 ahead when the half-time whistle was sounded.

Outside half Dion Jones scored both of the RGC tries.

New skipper Afon Bagshaw had been looking for a positive start from RGC and he told the club's website: “We started slowly last season, which always puts you on the back foot so the importance of getting some wins on the board early can’t be understated.

"Pre-season wise we have come together well and the boys are all in a good place. "It all feels a bit more settled as well, full league fixtures and we know what is ahead of us."

Bagshaw added: "As group we have talked about our home form and making sure we get those results at Stadiwm CSM and if we do that, then picking up away wins will mean we are competing at the top end of the table.

"The only way we will do that is to make sure our performance levels are high, as last season when we didn’t achieve those expected levels, we came away with nothing."
