BALA 19
WREXHAM 0
YOUNGSTERS came to the fore as Bala ended their promising SWALEC League Division Two North (North) campaign on a winning note.
It was a case of third time lucky for the men from Maes Gwyniad, as poor weather caused two earlier scheduled meetings with Wrexham to be postponed.
Saturday was the final opportunity for the game to be played and it finally went ahead with Bala deserved 19-0 victors.
“It was quite even in the first half and in the second half they started for the first quarter-of-an-hour in our half,” said Bala chairman Tony Parry.
“But we outplayed them in the last 20 minutes and we were camped in their half.”
As the match had no bearing on the end-of-season Division Two North promotion play-offs, Bala used the occasion to try out a number of youth team players.
Youth team fly-half Rhydian Jones crossed for Bala’s solitary try in the first half, which was converted by Gareth Owen, to give the home side a seven-point interval lead.
Owen just failed with an earlier penalty effort as Bala threatened, while Wrexham gave a good account of themselves, especially among the forwards.
Wrexham had the better of things in the early stages of the second half, but they were hit by the loss of captain Guy Bingham, who suffered a twisted knee.
After weathering a spot of pressure, Bala’s superior fitness told as they completed the final 20 minutes on top.
Youth team flanker Glyn Roberts was used as a winger and he marked the move with an unconverted try.
Soon after captain for the day Ifan Hughes crossed for Bala’s third try, with Gareth Owen successfully adding the extras.
