BATTLING Ruthin provided Caernarfon with a stiff examination of their SWALEC League Division One (North) championship hopes.

The Blues’ last run-out was a 50-point stuffing of top-four wannabes Pwllheli, so second-placed Caernarfon knew they were likely to face a tough test in their penultimate game of the season.

As it went the Cofis secured a winning bonus point as they crossed for four tries, to keep up the pressure on leaders Nant Conwy who face Ruthin in their last game of the season.

Second row Andrew Hughes crossed for a brace of tries, while there was one apiece for scrum-half Gwilym Hendy and hooker Liam Leung.

For the visitors winger Huw Parry and centre Gethin Hughes crossed for tries, while full back Shay Tudor sent over a penalty.

Ex-Ruthin prop Eifion Roberts can breath a little easier as the Sale Sharks’ Guinness Premiership future is secure.

The relegation-threatened Sharks were assured of retaining their Premiership status after Leeds Carnegie’s 12-10 win against Worcester Warriors in “The Million Pound Match”.

On Friday, Eifion gave another 80-minute performance as the Sharks were pipped 32-30 at home by the Newcastle Falcons.
