GRESFORD 143
DENBIGH 144-1
(Denbigh won 26-2)

ANOTHER bowling masterclass over the weekend cemented Denbigh’s standing at the top of the Division One table.

Seven days earlier and it was a fine spell from Alec Lewis that spearheaded the Denbigh juggernaut, but last Saturday it was the turn of Wales U-16 spinner Harrison Jones and Australian William Affleck to take the spotlight with the ball.

Visiting skipper Ben Wilcox-Jones called correctly at the toss and decided he quite fancied a spot of fielding to open the afternoon at Gresford.

The hosts’ top order largely fired with Gareth Rowland (59), Joe Benson (29) and Sean Richards (23) in scoring mood.

However, little was added further down the Gresford line-up as Jones and Affleck weaved their magic.

Jones’ nine-over stint yielded fine figures of 5-23, while Affleck sent down eight overs and finished with a not-too-shabby 4-18.

Stuart Griffiths picked up the other wicket to fall - and then took the match away from Gresford with the bat after the home side were dismissed for 143.

Opener Griffiths led the chase with a superb unbeaten 70 to see Denbigh through to a 26-point haul.

Fellow opener Gerallt Lyall was also in decent form with bat in hand, scoring 48, while number three Affleck chipped in with 10 not out before the end.
