THE 2010 road season may be coming to a close but VC Melyd and Rhyl CC are finishing with a flurry of races, with two time trials last week of different character and two open events to come.

These are a 10-mile time trial at St Asaph on Sunday and the Prestatyn Prom charity races on Beach Road East on Sunday evening, September 26.

VC Melyd’s Mike Cummins, Alan Overson and Gary Houlston again dominated the ‘5’ at Denbigh with times close to the 11-minute mark.

Gwyn Lovibond (Rhyl CC) was fastest junior with 12-48 for 14th and World MTBO vets’ champ Sarah Bayliss was best lady with 13-42.

On Sunday a classic course was used, the 37 miles TT over the Denbigh Moors and Alan Overson was able to turn the tables on Cummins to take the victory with a one hour 37 minutes 50 seconds time to his rival’s 1-42-42.

Richard Lee produced a 1-52-45 personal best for fourth.

Lovibond and Dylan Kerfoot-Robson (Rhos-On-Sea CC) raced at the new Tameside road circuit in Manchester and in the main U-14 race, Robson, of St Asaph, tied for first with Billy Harding (Paul Milnes/Bradford Olympic RC) after Lovibond had been caught along with breakaway partner Sean McGovern (Eastlands Velo) with just 500 metres to go to the line. The Dyserth youngster took sixth.

Sol Kerfoot-Robson took second in the U-10s to Tom Stewart (Southport).
Mike Cummins took the final Rhyl CC/VC Melyd nine-mile time trial in 21 minutes 37 seconds on the Denbigh-based course.

There were two personal bests in breezy conditions, but one was a storming performance from Melyd’s Colby Kneale which gained him second place in 22-27.

The Ruthin man finished a lofty 18th in the Merida Mountain Bike Challenge last year and will aim to do even better in next month’s annual off-road festival in the town.

Martyn Fairlamb (Rhyl CC) also set a pb in 14th place with 26-55.
