MENAI BRIDGE 2nds 147-1
DENBIGH 2nds 145-7
(Menai Bridge won 9-1)

YOU would expect to pick up more than a solitary point after batting first and scoring 145.

But that wasn't the case for Denbigh 2nds as their losing Division Three streak continued with a heavy loss at league leaders Menai Bridge.

After a run of five wins earlier in the season a fourth successive defeat for Denbigh at the weekend away at Menai Bridge saw the league leaders inflict Denbigh's heaviest defeat of the campaign.

A green and damp pitch greeted the teams at Tyn Y Caeau and the toss was likely to be an important factor.

Unfortunately visiting skipper David Roberts called incorrectly and Denbigh reluctantly found themselves batting first.

Bridge managed to make use of the helpful conditions and the visitors found scoring tricky but openers Joe Lewis and Lee Mason steadily built a solid 50-partnership before Mason took on one pull shot too many and was caught in the deep for 19.

Joe Lewis, given a chance at opening, battled superbly for his 42.

Chris Brown and Craig Stubbs both reached 19 as the visitors struggled to cope with the conditions and too many of the Denbigh batsmen managed to get in before getting themselves out as veteran Steve Jones claimed 5-35 from 12 tight overs to move to 40 wickets for the season.

With a below-par total to defend on a now dry pitch Denbigh needed to ensure that their bowling was on top form but struggled to create any wicket-taking chances.

Daf Lewis toiled bravely without luck for 12 tight overs where just 20 runs were scored, Lewis induced an edge that flew through the slips as the fielding side craved a breakthrough.

Leg spinner Matty Griffiths provided some reason to be cheerful as he produced some of the top bowling of the day, getting the ball to turn and bounce and he was rewarded with Denbigh's only wicket of the day as he bamboozled Jones to bowl him through his legs and claim the solitary point for the visitors.

However, Gethin Roberts (54 not out) and Evan Hughes (46 not out) guided the hosts to a matchwinning 147-1 with nearly eight overs to spare.

Another positive for Denbigh was the top class fielding display from youngster Gethin Williams who performed brilliantly at each of the positions he took up.

Having played the top-four in the league in the last four games Denbigh will be looking to halt their slump at home to Castell Alun this weekend.
