RUTHIN 59
BLAENAU GWENT 22

RUTHIN women caused a major stir in the first round of the Welsh Cup by beating top opposition from South Wales.

Blaenau Gwent, who play in the First Division South league, made the long trip up from the valleys with high hopes of progre
ssing in the cup.

Ruthin had other ideas, though, and had prepared well for the cup match.
They showed their intention from the first whistle as Sarah Simpkin powered through the Blaenau defence to score her first try of the match.

Blaenau regained their composure and played to their strengths, making use of their big pack and scoring from a quick tap penalty. Ruthin were pressurised in the scrum but held their own as the game progressed.

One of the stars of the tie was centre Sophie Edwards who broke through the defence and scored five tries, sister Lucy was at hand to set up many of the tries with great interplay.

Sarah Simpkin scored a further two tries and another standout player, Siwan Hughes had an outstanding game on the wing, scoring two tries and putting in some very hard tackles to quash many of Blaenau's attacks.

Leah Hughes converted seven of the tries.

The game was halted for 30 minutes during the second half when Ruthin prop Vicky Warner was injured when the scrum collapsed.

She was taken to hospital by ambulance but was thankfully released later that evening.
