TRAIL running is rapidly gaining in popularity - one of the best races on the UK circuit was held locally last week.

The Denbigh Harriers' Fairy Freckled Cow Trail Race was held around the Alwen reservoir on a showery Sunday, July 6.

This follows a newly devised and very scenic footpath around the reservoir near Cerrigydrudion.

There was a great turno
ut of more than 100 runners with competitors coming from far and wide and the race is generously sponsored annually by Llaeth y Llan Village Dairy, who provide a pot of yoghurt and a T-shirt for each finisher .

This year's winner was Darren Blazier (Abergele Harriers) who completed the course in 40 minutes 16 seconds, followed by David Alexander (West Cheshire AC) in 40.40.

The following were first in their category: V45, Mike Robbins (Wrexham AC) 41.45; V40, Tom Annable (Vale Royal) 42.19; V55, David Bewlay 45.37; V50, Stephen Bellis (Buckley) 45.41.

First lady home was Phillipa Taylor (Prestatyn RC) who won the F40 section in 49 minutes 21 seconds.

Other category winners were: F50, Alison Whitelaw (Abergele Harriers) 51.20; F35, Dawn Urquhart (Buckley) 51.36; F55, Grace Hough (Telford Harriers) 58.58; F65, Brenda Davies (Bro Dysynni) 62.00.

In 33rd place was the first Denbigh Harrier home, Paul Conlon (V40), in 50.08 and in 46th place was clubmate Emma Collins, also first in her class of F45 in 55.21.

But the Harriers were not the only Denbigh representatives on show - albeit with a slightly different spelling!

Among the entrants were three members of the Denby Dale Travellers Running Club over from Yorkshire.

Thanks goes to Roger Snaith and his team of local Army Cadets who did an excellent job with car parking and directions and the Red Cross for their presence, without whose help the event could not have taken place so smoothly.
