It's super Mario as Llangollen lose out
LLANGOLLEN 120-9D
MARCHWIEL WREXHAM 121-4
(Marchwiel Wrexham won by six wickets)
LOOKING at the scores and this looks to be a straightforward win for Marchwiel Wrexham in their efforts to make the step up to the Premier Division.
But lowly Llangollen had their moments to make things more difficult for their visitors during the course of the game and at various points looked to have the upper hand.
Skipper Tom King called correctly at the toss and said Llan should have first go with the bat and openers Greg King and Owen Cornfield did get them off to a decent start.
King reigned by top scoring with 47, while Cornfield provided ample support with 23, but the innings swung with the introduction into the Marchwiel Wrexham attack of South African Mario Swart.
He took three quick wickets to put Llangollen on the back foot and the hosts never really recovered after that.
Only Nick Austin (15) reached double figures in the middle-to-late order as Llan were forced to declare on 120-9 at the end of the 45th over.
Although Marchwiel were strong favourites at this point, the match was back in the balance when the visitors' response was reduced to 48-4.
Craig Boyle led the fightback with three wickets, while Greg King also took a wicket.
But Llan's joy was shortlived as Swart (44 not out) and Salman Mohammed (34 not out) compiled an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 73 to win the day.
