DIVISION One title favourites Northop strengthened their hand at the top with a comprehensive success at Rhewl.

With Northop r
unning away with the division, this was always going to be a tough fixture for the villagers.

It was made more difficult with alarming early swing and movement off the wicket, after the visiting side asked Rhewl to bat first.

At one stage Rhewl were 1-2 from just two overs and the rebuilding of the innings took some time as the Northop bowling attack maintained tight lines and lengths.

The highlight of the innings was from young Alex Gill- the only batsman on show, for either team, to really come to terms with a very difficult surface.

Sixteen-year-old prospect Gill scored a well crafted 50, which on any other surface would have been equivalent to a century!

Gill's knock held the Rhewl innings together and included seven boundaries and stoic defence.

This was an innings that showed maturity well beyond his years as wickets tumbled around.

Rhewl struggled to 94 all out, with Gill being stumped for a round 50 as the innings drew to a close.

The Rhewl spinners again took control with Chris Campbell picking up two early wickets, including the impressive G Williams.

Rob Eccles bowled his allocation of 13 overs for 15 runs and included an impressive 10 maiden overs.

Despite this good bowling and pressure on a drying wicket, there simply weren't enough runs on the board to trouble the strong Northop line-up.

After the game Rhewl skipper Gareth 'Billy' Morewood said: "Obviously it is bitterly disappointed to lose today.

"But there are always positives and the innings of Alex Gill was a brilliant one. I cannot think of more difficult batting conditions than during the first 25-to-30 overs of our innings, but Gilly got stuck in for a long innings and showed that he is a real prospect for the future.

"Rob (Eccles) again bowled well and economically but we needed another 30-40 runs to make things difficult for them, really.

"We now have a week off before playing Brymbo at home and bottom team Corwen away. We will be targeting some good performances in those games to get our season going again after some disappointing results."
