STRUGGLING St Asaph failed to make the most of their opportunities as they took another big step towards relegation on Saturday.

With Llanrwst climbing off the foot of the standings with a surprise success at Mold, the Saints are in last place again following this 21-run reverse to Bethesda.

But St Asaph certainly had chances to come out on top during Bethesda's opening gambit of 165 all out.

The Saints' bowlers initially held sway, though, as the visitors were quickly reduced to 28-4.

This became 87-6 and 125-8 as the home side continued to boss things, but a crucial ninth wicket stand of 30 between Iestyn Roberts (35 not out) and Lee Williams (14) swung it Bethesda's way.

Dave North was the pick of the home bowlers, with 4-30 from his 15 overs while there were also wickets for Paul Fleming (2-20) and Adam El-Lamie (2-25).

Despite the loss of opener Joe Lunn for a duck, St Asaph's reply did get off to a solid start with Richard Arun (24) and Gareth Jones (14) settling things down.

Aussie Geovanni De Bartolo hit 53 as the Saints looked to be on course for a fifth win of the summer, but despite an unbeaten 18 from Dave North, there were few runs in the middle and lower order.

Lee Williams snapped up 4-29 for Bethesda, while Iestyn Roberts bagged 2-19.
