CORWEN knew they were up for a tough challenge in their Welsh Cup preliminary round tie at Bethesda.

The current Welsh Alliance champions are expected to romp away with the championship again and despite having their moments, Corwen were always second best in this season opener.

Corwen secretary Huw Jones enthused: "What a side they have got!

"I think they are the best side we have played since Glantraeth when we were in the Cymru Alliance - and that was eight years ago."

Bethesda had the benefit of the wind at their backs in the first half and took the lead within five minutes through an unfortunate Doug McDonald own goal.

They added a further couple before the break, including one right on the stroke of half-time.

Corwen refused to throw in the towel, and a spirited showing saw the visitors on top for 20 minutes in the second period.

James Davies hit the crossbar with an effort, while the Athletic keeper was forced into a good stop as Corwen pressed.

But in the end, Bethesda finished the game on top with another four quickfire strikes.

*Corwen Reserves opened their Wrexham Area League campaign with a 2-1 victory at home to Glyn Ceiriog Reserves on Friday.

Richard Crimp and Andrew Becker scored for the winners.
