CAERNARFON TOWN 4

IT was always going to be a tough ask for Ruthin Town to gain something from their home Huws Gray Alliance clash with champions-elect Caernarfon Town.

The Cofis bagged their 17th success of the campaign in front of a large crowd at Memorial Park Fields and they're now just two wins away from claiming the title and promotion back to the JD Welsh Premier League.

Home keeper Ryan Goldston got an early taste of the action when he was forced to deny Jamie Breese in the third minute.

The striker got on the end of Gareth Evans' cross into the penalty area, but Goldston was able to save.

At the other end, Caernarfon number one Alex Ramsay was called into action when got his hands to a low Llyr Morris shot.

Darren Thomas linked up well with Breese in the 10th minute, but he was unable to find the target when well placed and Ruthin defender Kevin Evans cleared the danger.

Caernarfon were soon celebrating, though.

Thomas struck a low free kick from just outside of the box that took Goldston by surprise.

The hosts looked to fight their way back into the game after this setback and they began to match their opponents in the middle of the park.

Chances were few and far between in the final third, however, where Ruthin found a watertight Cofis' backline in commanding form.

Danny Brookwell had been causing problems down Ruthin’s left flank, but his switch to the right side paid immediate dividends.

He stepped inside at pace before taking the ball around Goldston and striking it into an empty net to make it 2-0.

Caernarfon were on the front foot and Breese went close to adding a third in the 39th minute, but Goldston did well to rush out and thwart him.

There was no denying the Caernarfon number nine, however, and he raced past the Ruthin defence three minutes before the break to fire an effort into the roof of the net.

Chris Williams’ hosts weren't about to throw in the towel and the enjoyed long spells of possession after the interval in an effort to get back into the encounter.

Top scorer Llyr Morris was looking sharp in and around the penalty area, but he couldn't find a way past the Town defence.

Substitute Craig Wilkinson did have an attempt, which he fired wide from 12 yards out.

Jamie Crowther, Nathan Craig and Gareth Evans were working hard in midfield for Caernarfon to counter the Ruthin threat.

Breese secured his brace in the 57th minute to put the game out of Ruthin's reach.

The striker confidently sent the ball past Goldston for goal number four.

To their credit, Ruthin continued to search for a consolation goal and they managed to force Ramsay into two late saves.

However, the visitors were intent on keeping their clean sheet intact and they managed to achieve this.
