RHEWL 6

CAERWYS 1

SIX of the best means that Rhewl remain well in the mix for a top-three finish this season.

Sion Roberts' side now trail third-placed Clawddnewydd by only three points after easing to a 6-1 success versus basement side Caerwys.

Despite the outcome, this was no easy game for Rhewl, with Shaun Davies' visitors seeing plenty of the ball for long spells.

Caerwys arguably made the better start and they had the first attempts at goal.

Geraint Jones twice chanced his arm from distance, with home keeper comfortably gathering one of them, while the other sailed over.

Rhewl would prove to be the more clinical team in front of goal and three goals in the space of just 11 minutes saw them take control.

The home side went in front after seven minutes when Stuart Griffiths' pinpoint 50-yard crossfield ball picked out Ian Williams and when his cross wasn't dealt with, Dan McClean found the target.

Seven minutes later and Rhewl found themselves two goals to the good.

Matty Evans was the creator on this occasion and Ian Williams picked out the corner of the net with a good strike.

Rhewl's purple patch continued when another fine crossfield ball from Stuart Griffiths set up Williams to score his second of the evening and 10th goal of the season.

Caerwys looked to respond and Joe Jones fired an ambitious effort into the side-netting, while Geraint Jones' strike forced a good save from Rhewl number one Dave Carroll.

Carroll had to be at his very best soon after when the ball deflected off home defender Dion Lloyd, with the Rhewl keeper showing great reactions to make the save.

Rhewl also had further chances before the break, with Matty Evans' effort being well saved and Dyfan Lloyd's header from a corner hit the crossbar.

It was game over when Rhewl made it 4-0 just four minutes into the second half.

Matty Evans' back-heel set up Tom Howatson to coolly put his shot from 12 yards into the corner of the net.

Caerwys weren't just there to make up the numbers, though, and they were given cause to celebrate in the 51st minute.

Lax home defending there may have been, but Seth Geary showed bags of determination to cut the deficit.

The visitors had further opportunities, with Joe Jones firing over when well placed and Graeme Geary's header was cleared off the line.

Matty Evans was denied by a great save at the other end and just when it looked as if the final score was going to be four-one, Rhewl bagged another couple of goals in injury time.

Both of them were netted by Ian Williams, who finished up with a four-goal haul on the night.
