CORWEN GIRLS U-16s 3

PENRHYN BAY 1

SEREN was the star of the show as Corwen Girls U-16s picked up a spot of silverware over the weekend.

The final match of the 2017/18 season saw Corwen up against Penrhyn Bay in the final of the North Wales League Cup.

For most of the girls this was their last junior match before they progress to play women's football next season - and what a game it was!

On an excellent playing surface at Llanrwst and kindly refereed by FIFA women's official Cheryl Foster, both teams put in excellent displays of attacking football in front of a large and appreciative crowd.

Although Corwen were the victors, Penrhyn Bay actually created most of the chances over the course of the final.

The first half saw both teams cancel each other out, with each side having a few half-chances.

For Corwen, Ffion Evans’ fine drive well saved by the Penrhyn Bay keeper.

Turning to the second half and Corwen striker Seren Williams employed a more central role.

She was the star of the show in goal in the semi-final and Seren showed what a complete footballer she is by scoring a second half hat-trick.

Her first came when she latched on to a through ball, while her second a header from a well-worked corner.

Seren completed her hat-trick with what many felt was Corwen’s goal of the season.

Captain Amelia Evans started things with a surging run from the back, before playing a pass to Ffion Evans on the wing.

Her cross was met perfectly on the half-volley by the penalty spot by Seren Williams to make it 3-0.

Penrhyn Bay would not lie down and an excellent strike by Molly Watkinson brought them back into the tie.

Two remarkable saves from Corwen’s keeper Elliw Ford halted the fightback, while the woodwork rescued Corwen on four occasions.

Corwen dug deep, with sweeper Rachel Roberts in majestic form, but praise must be given to the whole team who ran their socks off for the cause.
