A WELTERWEIGHT boxer from Pwllglas has won the title for the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association Elite’s bout in Cardiff on Saturday, April 7.

Sion Yaxley, 21, in his 40th fight since starting boxing at 14-years-old, put his high-level experience and a heavy left-hook to use and proved too much for opponent Jake Tinklin on the night, winning on points.

Mr Yaxley’s father, Alan, said: “We’re very proud of Sion, he’s done very well to come along as much as he has.

“Since New Year he hasn’t been out for a drink once. You’ve got to be determined if you want to get far in the sport and Sion has committed himself.

Mr Yaxley’s, who has been part of Wales’ Commonwealth team though not chosen for this year’s games due to a lack of experience at that level, will add his recent title to an impressive record, including the Welsh Novice and Welsh Youth Championships and performances across Europe.

Alan Yaxley said: “The teaching Sion received by Denbigh Boxing Club, from Sparrow Harrison, Owen Gallagher, Nathan Gallagher and Craig Winter was crucial as they put the foundations in Sion. He wouldn’t be where he is without their guidance.

“Sion was very unlucky not to make the Commonwealth team. Had it been a year or two later he would have had a real chance.”

Sparrow Harrison, coach for 15 years at Denbigh Boxing Club, said: “We’re very proud of Sion, he’s done remarkably well as a boxer from North Wales when most of the attention is in the south.

“We advised that Sion moved to Daffryn Boxing Club [where he is currently based] as there are more suitable sparring partners that will advance his ability.

“We follow Sion’s career every step of the way and have real respect for his family and the commitment they have made to their son’s progress.”

Following victory in Cardiff, Mr Yaxley will now will now turn his sights onto the TriNations Championships in early June.
