TWO weeks after two of Prestatyn Running Club’s super-vets made their debuts for Wales, two of the club's younger members have been selected for the same honour.

Jenna Bagnall and Lois Lee have both been named in the Welsh U-17s’ squad for the youth trail-running international in Italy next month.

It follows last week’s trial at the Red Kite Challenge in Devil’s Bridge, near Aberystwyth, where both turned in fine performances.

Jenna finished second overall in 20.26, with Lois, who was running for St David’s College, Llandudno, fourth in 21.38.

The two of them have been in great form over the past 12 months, playing a huge part in the success of the ladies’ cross-country team.

Jenna has also represented Welsh Colleges and Lois the Welsh Schools.

Another of the club’s ladies running superbly at the moment is Naomi Cane.

Last week she competed in the Isle of Wight ultra marathon, a tough 33-mile trail race along coastal paths, and out of 26 starters she was not only the second lady home in six hours and 28 minutes, but was also fifth overall.

There were trophies and titles galore for club members at the club’s own race, the Ffrith 5k on Sunday.

The event incorporated the North Wales championships and in addition to all the helpers, 30 members took part.

The race was won by Steve Skates, with Andy Bromley third, while Amie Bagnall was the second lady home behind Wrexham teenager Eden O’Dea.

There was a record entry of 161 for the junior races, with strong teams from several schools in Flintshire and Denbighshire.

The schools’ team award went to Bodnant, whose squad included some Prestatyn club members, and Prestatyn RC won the club award.

Members representing the club, as opposed to their schools, were:

Girls Years 5/6: 6, Ffion Armstrong 4.11; 7, Grace Jones 4.13; 13, Edan Jones 4.29; 48, Faith Ward 7.13; 49, Paige Jones 7.27. Boys Years 3/4: 6, Jac Armstrong.

Club member Joseph Duffy won the Year 5/6 race in a new course record of 3.32.

The races were sponsored by Prestatyn Town Council and organisers would also like to thank staff at the Ffrith Beach complex for their support.

Second-claim member Steve Forsyth took another win in Saturday’s parkrun at Conwy, finishing just outside his personal best in 17.32.

In the Wepre parkrun, Sandra Bickerstaff was 117th in a personal best of 31.34 and Julie Evans was 216th in 41.32, also a pb.

Work colleagues Gethin Evans and Wyn Roberts both took part in the Ruthin triathlon last week.

Gethin came 20th overall and he was the third M40 in 78.14, with Wyn 50th in 88.20.

Wyn followed it up over the weekend with a 42k triathlon at Betws-y-Coed, which involved two trail runs totalling 17k, two bike rides of 24k and one kilometre of kayaking.

Despite an early mishap when his chain broke, he finished 13th out of 155, taking 12 minutes off last year’s time.
