YET another member of Prestatyn Running Club has received a Welsh call-up.

Steve Skates, who has had a brilliant 12 months on road, country and fells, has been included in the Welsh team for the home countries’ international mountain race at Sedbergh on June 2.

In March 2017, Skates won the British Masters’ over-35’s cross-country championship and his many successes since then include taking the North Wales Cross-Country League men’s title, winning the Excalibur Marathon and, last week, becoming North Wales 5k champion.

On Sunday, Amie Bagnall lined up in the elite field at the Great Manchester 10k, joining the likes of world champion Genzebe Dibaba and top British internationals Gemma Steel and Lily Partridge.

The 24-degree heat affected most times and Amie settled for completing the course, which she did in a creditable 40.40 – and she also had the compensation of meeting Mo Farah.

In the same race, Alex Ryder finished in an excellent 39.15 and Amie's mum Karen Roberts clocked 73 minutes.

Two club members won their age-group categories in Friday’s Christleton 5k in Chester, which, as usual, attracted a high-quality field from North-West clubs.

The placings were: 21, Steve Skates 15.47; 44, Andrew Bromley 16.23; 111, James Kimber 17.39; 115, Matty Smith 17.45; 250, James Rogers 20.06; 275, Joy Hickman 20.42 (1st L50); 281, Sian Beck 20.49 (pb); 349, Gareth Hughes 23.30 (1st M70).

Less than 48 hours later, James Rogers ran in the hilly Snowdonia half-marathon, coming 79th overall in 1-50.31.

In her first season of serious fell-running, Clare Atterbury took on one of the discipline’s toughest challenges, the 10.5-mile Cader Idris race.

This event involves 2,927 feet of climbing and a variety of terrain. The heat was another factor, but she finished an excellent 66th overall in 3-01.41.

New recruit Joshua Cerefice followed up his brilliant run in the Ffrith 5k with another great outing in his first parkrun at Conwy.

He managed to finish sixth overall in 18.26.

Other Prestatyn RC placings were: 27, Steve Weedman 21.11 (pb); 84, Martin Gill 24.57 (pb); 120, Andy Clark 26.36 (pb); 188, Debbie Weedman 30.42; 241, Andy Hughes 33.35; 242, Tracy Hughes 33.36; 300, Val Jones 39.56.

Two members also set personal bests in the Wepre Parkrun in Connah’s Quay.

Sandra Bickerstaff was 117th in 31.34 and Julie Evans finished 216th in 41.32.

Arwel Jones travelled to Penrhyn, Bangor, for his first attempt at the parkrun there and he finished 35th in 23.38.

Members had very mixed fortunes in the Aber Dash, the latest in the Joe Brown Tuesday Night series of fell-races.

Steve Brown finished 46th in 51.13, with Clare Atterbury five places behind in 53.55, but both Neil Stevenson and Barry Ellis failed to finish after getting lost in the mist.

One of the club's youngest members, Lily-Ava Morris, came away with two golds from the North Wales track and field championships in Wrexham.

She won the U-11s’ 75 metres race in 11.39 and then the 150 metres in 22.52.

This Friday, May 25 will see the club holding its annual social run at Rhewl, near Ruthin, with over 50 expected to attend.

Members are asked to arrive by 6.30pm for the run to start by 7pm, and it will be followed by a meal in the village sports pavilion.
