BURGERS, chips and chocolate cake may not be the obvious pre-race choice for athletes, but it did the trick for some members of Prestatyn Running Club at the weekend.

On Friday evening, about 50 members attended the club’s annual social run and barbecue in Rhewl, and although some ended up running further than expected, it didn’t affect their performances over the following 48 hours.

Only 12 hours after his 11-mile run, Steve Skates chalked up another win in the Conwy Parkrun, while on Saturday afternoon, Clare Atterbury continued her love affair with fell-running.

She took on the tough eight-mile Moel Eilio race from Llanberis, finishing in 2-15.36 to take the silver medal in the L40 class in the regional championship.

James Rogers, another who did more than planned on Friday, also benefited from Friday’s unusual carbo-loading.

He travelled to Scotland for the Edinburgh Marathon, which is hailed as the country’s fastest, and with a mist covering the city, conditions were perfect.

He finished in 3-23.37, slicing seven minutes off his personal best achieved in the Chester Marathon.

Prestatyn RC parkrun placings: 1, Steve Skates 17.41; 84, Liam Martin 23.55 (pb); 105, Martin Gill 24.35 (pb); 113, Helen Ashworth 25.03; 158, Liz Martin 27.30; 220, Debbie Weedman 30.23; 262, Lesley Furneaux 32.32.

In the previous week’s Rock ‘n Roll Marathon in Liverpool, John Jones finished in 4-29.21 despite the warm temperature.
