DINBYCH 56

RHYL 9

DESPITE giving a spirited performance and being competitive in many aspects of play, Rhyl could not contain a rampant Dinbych side over the weekend.

The Caeau Les Phillips hosts gained another bonus point victory and they secured a WRU League Division Two (North) double over their derby rivals in the process.

A mark of Rhyl's resistance was the fact that Dinbych were only able to convert three of their 10 tries, with the majority of them being scored wide out.

Dinbych's success stemmed from the dominance of their pack, especially in the scrums, where the front row of hooker Dafydd Jones and props Gareth Jones and Joe Davies had the upper hand.

Both props also excelled in open play with powerful bursts, while Joe Davies put in a crash tackling stint in a man of the match performance.

The stream of possession from the pack allowed half backs Garin Roberts and Dan O'Sullivan to launch wave after wave of attacks by their dangerous three-quarters to continually threaten an overworked Rhyl defence, which did well to limit the scoring.

Dinbych opened the scoring after five minutes when they attacked from their own half with slick handling in midfield releasing left wing Kieran Bonar on a touchline dash, which was only halted just short of the Rhyl line.

When the ball was recycled infield, flanker Tom Eden was able to force his way over near the posts for a try, converted by Dan O'Sullivan.

Rhyl replied in the 10th minute when centre Richard Williams kicked a penalty from just inside the 22.

Dinbych responded immediately when centre Tom Seddon went over on the right following a scrum inside the Rhyl 22 for a try, again converted by Dan O'Sullivan.

Rhyl then reduced the deficit after a short period of pressure through two more penalties by Richard Williams.

However, Dinbych then pulled away once more with two unconverted tries in the closing minutes of the first half.

First, a Rhyl scrum was driven back under their own posts, which allowed Dan O'Sullivan to put Kieran Bonar over for a try near the corner.

From the restart, Dinbych attacked down the right through their props and then recycled infield for Aidyn Jones and Tom Seddon to combine to put skipper Narmer El Lamie over for a try.

Leading 29-9 at the interval, Dinbych scored from the restart kick when Kieran Bonar broke through the Rhyl defence to set up an attack, which was only halted with a lineout just short of the Rhyl line.

Tom Eden stole the ball at the back of the lineout for Garin Roberts to feed inside to Gareth Jones and the prop to put lock Gareth Beach over in the corner for a well-worked unconverted try.

Dan O'Sullivan then broke through down the right, before the ball was recycled and the forwards again showed their handling skills to put Kieran Bonar over in the corner for his second try.

Flanker Dan Lawrence was the next to benefit from slick handling to go over in the right hand corner for an unconverted try.

Dinbych dominated both territory and possession, and they increasingly exerted pressure at scrum time, where Rhyl did well to rescue possession despite being continually in retreat.

Dan O'Sullivan then went over for try after the outside half had broken through a disorganised defence from a ruck on the 22.

This was converted by Gruff Roberts, who had replaced Owain Davies at full back, and it was Roberts who scored Dinbych's ninth try as he outflanked a now tiring defence after getting possession directly from a scrum near the visitors' line.

Dinbych's final try was initiated with a counter attack from a relieving kick just inside their own half, with slick handling releasing Tom Seddon on a run down the touchline to exchange passes with Aidyn Jones before going over in the corner for their 10th and final try.
