A LAST gasp goal ended any hopes Bala Town of achieving a weekend victory in their home clash with Newtown.

It was Chris Hughes' visitors who claimed the Cymru Premier League spoils 2-1 at Maes Tegid courtesy of a 90th minute strike.

There was a sunny day at Bala as both teams supplied an end-to-end beginning to the key contest, with the Lakesiders looking for victory in their top-three aims.

Colin Caton's side did go close to an opener after half-an-hour as Antony Kay tried his luck from distance, but Newtown keeper Dave Jones just managed to keep it out.

Jones collected Nathan Burke's half-volley as the half drew to a close, while it was Newtown who grabbed the opening goal early in the second half.

Nick Rushton was on target four minutes after the restart.

Bala looked to respond as Lassana Mendes sent a dangerous cross into George Newell, but his header went over the top.

At the other end, Harri Lloyd kept the Lakesiders in the contest with a brilliant save to thwart Newtown's hopes of a second goal.

Newell went close with an acrobatic effort, but Bala did level things up with seven minutes left.

Chris Venables headed the ball across the box and Newell netted with a powerful strike.

Ollie Shannon went so close to giving Bala an 87th lead, but in the last minute Newtown won it with a goal from Zeli Ismael.
