BANGOR is set to welcome a powerful female folk duo from across the pond this week.

The globetrotting Lisa Maria and Amy Lou of Canadian act Mama's Broke will rock up to the Blue Sky Cafe on Thursday, July 25.

Since forming the band in 2014, Mama’s Broke has been gaining momentum fast having already completed two European, and several Canadian and US tours.

True to the transient nature of folk, Amy Lou and Lisa Marie first came together on the road and continue to travel the world, by all means, playing anywhere from circus shows in New Orleans to pirate ships in Amsterdam. Although highly influenced by their Canadian roots, Lisa and Amy are based out of nowhere and everywhere.

With crunchy instrumentals, the pair excel in delivering compelling performances with plenty of heart and raw energy.

Their two strong voices blend to create haunting harmonies, while they artfully juggle fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin, and incorporate traditional dance and foot percussion into their performance.

Drawing from old-time, Quebecois, blues, punk, Celtic, Balkan and doom metal, they create an incantatory soundscape that is both familiar and new, their original – and often dark – compositions push the boundaries of tradition and the constraints of genre. As they travel the world sharing and collecting song, which continues to define their music.

Join Lisa Marie and Amy Lou at the Blue Sky Cafe on Bangor High Street at 7pm.

Tickets are £10, with a £1 booking fee, available from blueskybangor.co.uk.
