A SOLO artist in the old style of a 'teller of tales and maker of music' is coming to Anglesey.

Legendary performer Andy Irvine is described as 'a man whose voice gets to the very soul of Ireland.'

He has been hailed as “a tradition in himself,” and on Monday October 14, he will be appearing at the "The Vic," the Victoria hotel in Menai Bridge.

Musician, singer, songwriter, and Lifetime Achievement Award winner at the inaugural RTÉ Folk Awards, Andy has had an amazing musical career over the past 50 years.

At the helm of legendary bands like Sweeney’s Men, in the mid 60s, to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70’s and then Patrick Street, Mozaik, LAPD and recently Usher’s Island, Andy Irvine is both a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians.

As a soloist, Andy fills the role of the archetypal troubadour with a show and a travelling lifestyle that reflect his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie.

To quote the Irish Times, he is "Often copied, never equalled." His repertoire consists of Irish traditional songs, dexterous Balkan dance tunes and a compelling cannon of his own songs.

In the 1960s he explored 'way out yonder' by 'the sunburnt thumb' visiting Bulgaria, Romania and Yugoslavia, earning his living as a street musician and absorbing the musical traditions of the Balkans.

Before heading to Anglesey, his tour took him across Ireland, including a sell out gig with Irish musician, guitarist and bouzouki player Dónal Lunny, at the Seamus Heaney Home Place,The Helicon, Bellaghy, in County Derry. His solo UK tour runs from October 6 - November 8.

Andy has played concerts all over Europe and has toured many times in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada. He was also undertaken extensive tours of Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Japan, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Argentina and Chile.

The doors open 8pm and tickets are available from Palas Print, Caernarfon (01286 874631) and Mudshark Records Bangor.
