A Crown court judge has asked for an explanation as to why a case had taken so long to come to court.

Judge Rhys Rowlands made the comments after a Ruthin man has denied an assault dating back to September 2016.

Defendant Martyn Glyn Jones, aged 50, of Llanrhydd Street in Ruthin, is charged with assault, occasioning actual bodily harm, upon Paul Ashworth, at Corwen.

He pleaded not guilty at Mold Crown Court and was bailed pending his trial in August.

Judge Rowlands said there had been delays in the case and asked for a written explanation why it had taken the police some 12 months to decide whether or not to charge in such a “straight-forward matter."
