A FORMER Coronation Street star has been tasked with bringing festive magic to Rhyl when he switches on the Christmas lights.

X Factor winner Shayne Ward will turn on the town's Christmas lights on Saturday, December 1.

Shayne won the X Factor in 2005. The 34-year-old was recently embroiled in a harrowing storyline in the soap when his character Aidan O'Connor took his own life.

His performance attracted huge critical acclaim and highlighted important issues around mental health.

Shayne will be joined by cllr Win Mullen-James, mayor of Rhyl.

Councillor Hugh Evans, leader of Denbighshire County Council, said: "Once again Rhyl’s Christmas lights switch-on will be a brilliant festive event for the whole family.

“I would encourage families to come down and enjoy the atmosphere and get into the Christmas spirit. It will also showcase the fantastic range of shops in the town centre and will offer the chance to see what Rhyl has to offer."

Shayne has released three albums, played at London’s O2 Arena, sold more than million albums, achieved 14 Platinum discs and had number one albums in nine countries. The TV favourite has also rocked West End audiences and appeared on Dancing On Ice.

Shayne's portrayal of Aidan Connor earned him Best Soap Exit honour at the Inside Soap Awards.

Former Emmerdale star Natalie Anderson - best known for her roles as Alicia Metcalfe - plus pop duo Sky Light Aura, female vocalist Bethan Tomkins and Serenity Royal will also be on hand to entertain the crowds.

The cast of Rhyl Pavilion’s Pantomime Aladdin will be attendance alongside costumed street performers and stilt walkers.

The afternoon will start at 2pm on the High Street and will finish with a short firework finale.

The event is organised by Denbighshire County Council and supported by Rhyl Town Council.

Cllr Mullen-James said: “Rhyl’s Christmas lights switch-on promises to be a show-stopper and the town council is delighted to once again be supporting a packed afternoon of entertainment. To be attracting a star of Shayne’s calibre is fantastic and I am sure he will be given a warm Rhyl welcome.”
