An innovative volunteering scheme in Powys received nationwide publicity as part of the Careers Wales Where Now? campaign to support students following their exam results.

It featured Lucy Collard, from Rhayader, who joined the Red Kite Volunteer Scheme at Llanidloes Hospital, which has been developed through a partnership between Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO) and Powys Teaching Heath Board (PTHB). The scheme supports people to volunteer in an inpatient hospital environment, proving a vital helping hand for patients, family and carers, and NHS staff.

Launching the scheme earlier this year in Llanidloes, Carl Cooper, chief executive officer for PAVO, said: “I am delighted that our Volunteer Centre in PAVO has worked so effectively with colleagues from Powys Teaching Health Board to establish the Red Kite Volunteering Scheme. Volunteers have played an essential role within the NHS since its inauguration 70 year ago. The Red Kite scheme gives people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to contribute to the work of the NHS in Powys in a way that is as rewarding for the volunteers as it is beneficial for those they help to care for.

Katrina Rowlands, assistant nurse director for PTHB added: “This is an excellent example of joint working allowing people of all ages an opportunity to contribute to caring for Powys residents, allowing exposure to the NHS . We look forward to extending the project across Powys and will look forward to our continued working with the third sector to further develop the volunteer workforce across all community settings.

Red Kite volunteer Lucy Collard said: “I really enjoy it as I am able to help people have a better time while in hospital. It also means that I am gaining experience and knowledge in an area I want to work in after I leave education.”

“Volunteering has helped to inform my career choices. It gives you the opportunity to try workplaces before you commit to full time employment. You’re also able to give back to the local community at the same time.

“I’d advise anyone looking for a volunteering role to turn to their local networks; there are plenty of opportunities out there, it’s just a case of finding one that fits you.”

Following the launch at Llanidloes Hospital, PAVO and PTHB are now recruiting volunteers for hospitals across the county. If you are a compassionate person with good communication skills, are a team player and have an understanding of the need for discretion and confidentiality please contact your local Volunteer Bureau or contact Michiel Blees at PAVO on 01597 822191, or email him at michiel.blees@pavo.org.uk for an informal discussions.
