A LOCAL youngster has had the opportunity to show off his talents in an international setting.

Former Ruthin Town Youth FC and Bala Town Academy player Patrick Jones was a member of the Wales squad that took part in this year's Victory Shield.

Jones was a member of the Ruthin and Bala squads until last year, when he was signed by Wrexham after catching their attention in the U-15s' Cymru Cup.

The Victory Shield is an annual tournament competed for by the U-16 teams of Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Wales won the trophy in 2015 with players such as Ben Woodburn, Ethan Ampadu and Tyler Roberts in the squad, while well known names such as Harry Wilson, Aaron Ramsey and Chris Gunter have all played in the competition.

On a wet and windy Monday in Tralee, Jones made his Welsh international debut as a 55th minute substitute against Scotland.

He took his place on the left wing with the score delicately poised at 1-1.

Patrick was assured on the ball and he was a constant threat.

In the last few minutes, he caused chaos by charging down a clearance by the keeper, which unfortunately fell to a Scottish player.

Patrick was included in the starting line-up for Wales' second match versus the Republic of Ireland.

Northern Ireland won the Victory Shield for only the second time in their history when they defeated Wales 3-1 in the final match.
