A PE department in Ruthin is preparing to represent Denbighshire alongside Gareth Bale, Menna Fitzpatrick and Geraint Thomas later this month.

Ysgol Brynhyfryd received the Sport in School Award at the Denbighshire Sports Awards (DSA) on November 8 and in doing so qualified for this year's prestigious BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year Awards in Cardiff.

The DSA school award, which is for those that provide good practice examples of sporting projects or initiatives that have raised the profile of sport or can be seen as sector leading regarding participation figures and sporting excellence

Denbighshire County Council's (DCC) head of education Karen Evans handed the tropy to Ysgol Brynhyfryd's physical education team Ffion White, 5x60 officer, Gwyneth Day, head of physical education and Sarah Mealor, physical education teacher on the night.

Brynhyfryd was chosen for its school-wide provision of the Welsh Government's 5x60 programme, which aims to have 90 per cent of children in Wales taking part in regular exercise by 2020.

It gives pupils a say in the activities they participate in - be it dodgeball, rugby, hill walking or table tennis - to encourage inclusivity, enjoyment and lifelong activity.

Gwyneth Day, head of physical education at Ysgol Brynhyfryd, said: “This is a massive accolade for Ysgol Brynhyfryd and is a reflection of the hard work of many people in the school including the wonderful students.

"The 5x60 sports programme is being delivered throughout the school. We are very honoured and extremely proud of our success.”

The categories for the DSA ceremony, held at the Llangollen Pavilion, also included Sports Performer, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, Disability Sport Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Councillor Bobby Feeley, DCC's cabinet lead member for well-being and independence, said: “The Denbighshire community sport awards has helped recognise and share some amazing stories over the last few years.

“This proves to us that the quality of sport in Denbighshire is very high and that there are plenty of opportunities for people to return to playing sport or to try a new sport as a beginner."

Denbighshire has had eight finalists and six winners at the BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year Awards over the last six years.

Ysgol Brynyfryd will join other DSA finalists there on December 16.
